The Decision Systems Group (QAX) harness data science, decision science, and software and systems engineering to deliver actionable insights and enable defensible decision-making. We support multiple agencies within the U.S. Government by developing decision systems that have impactful contributions in health and biosecurity, homeland protection, cyber security, and defense. You will help us pioneer scalable solutions that empower strategic action, risk mitigation and mission operations.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will ...
  • Collaborate with other specialists to cultivate solid engineering principles.
  • Use engineering practices around architectural design, testability, scalability, and maintainability in regard to, but not limited to, object-oriented programming and design patterns.
  • Apply technical and relational skills to implement projects of varying team sizes in highly collaborative environments.
  • Lead teams through the full software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, continuous integration and deployment, testing and transition to sustainment team.
  • Collaborate with sponsors to understand and articulate their needs by defining functional and system requirements and determining corresponding methods and tools for implementation.
  • Apply experiences using emerging and traditional technologies such as: high performance desktop visualizations, dynamic frontend web frameworks, strong backend design and development to name a few.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum requirement if you have...
  • A Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or other relevent technical field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of programming experience, preferably in Python and Java
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases, especially in regards to database design and scalability.
  • Extensive experience with version control workflows including Git and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience working with enterprise cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
  • Strong understanding of API design, REST APIs, and Oauth
  • Experience with Python/FastAPI, Java/Spring and associated application servers
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You will go above and beyond our requirements if you have...
  • Experience with dynamic web front end frameworks such as VueJs, React or Angular in addition to the corresponding software architecture design
  • Experience with Java / Kotlin desktop visualization frameworks such as Swing, Java FX or Tornado FX
  • Experience with use of ORM frameworks such as Hibernate and/or SQLAlchemy
  • Experience with RMF and ATO
  • Demonstrated experience in software development
  • Experience with DoD programs.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
