Responsible for assisting in the delivery of both direct and indirect high quality, patient and family centered care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse mentor/preceptor, Essential duties and job responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Purpose: The Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital is intended to help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of future Oncology Nurses. This fellowship will enhance the student's core clinical education through direct observation and exposure to oncology nursing care. Through this experience, students will learn about the various oncology nursing roles and responsibilities and discover possible career opportunities. The fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of direct observational and learning experiences, including exposure to:
* Oncology Nursing throughout the care continuum (possible roles/typical responsibilities, applied practice, career opportunities) including:o Medical Oncology
* Radiation Therapy
* Surgery (including OR experiences)
* Infusion Services & Chemotherapeutic agents
* Cancer Research & Clinical Trials through Yale University
* Palliative Care (benefits, resources, services)
* Patient Support Programs
* Various Internal Oncology-Related Forums and Oncology Nursing Education Programs

In addition, as part of this learning/development experience, Flynn Fellows will be required to complete and present an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project in some aspect of Oncology Nursing. The topic of the project will be selected by the Fellow. The EBP project is an opportunity for each Flynn Fellow to utilize the principles and context of EBP to evaluate a nursing policy, nursing practice, or procedure, and make recommendations based on current evidence. Project presentations will take place at the completion of the program to the Smilow nursing team and various leaders during the Fellowship Graduation Ceremony. Parents, grandparents, and siblings are invited.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Demonstrates basic skill in observing, assessing and communicating patient needs.
    • 1.1 Identifies changes in patient's condition and reports pertinent and concise information to members of the healthcare team in conjunction with RN mentor.
  • 2. Demonstrates basic skill in planning and providing direct patient care.
    • 2.1 Accepts report with RN mentor on patient assignment.
  • 3. Completes non-therapeutic functions as directed.
    • 3.1 Follows correct procedure in performing non-therapeutic functions as directed/supervised by RN mentor.
  • 4. Demonstrates accountability and responsibility in performance of role.
    • 4.1 Attendance meets Human Resources Student Nurse Intern guidelines.
  • 5. Demonstrates development in professoinal growth through daily activities.
    • 5.1 Identifies areas in performance needing improvement.
  • 6. Performs decentralized laboratory testing as credentialed and following established policies and procedures.
    • 6.1 Appropriately collects specimens (stool specimen and/or blood glucose), performs tests and interprets results under the direction and/or supervision of RN mentor. If assigned to Labor and Delivery may also collect urine specimen.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in an accredited School/Department of BSN program.

Application Process: This Fellowship is being offered to eight (8) rising nursing seniors from an accredited BSN nursing program. Three students will be placed in Smilow Greenwich/Long Ridge; 2 in Smilow Trumbull/Fairfield; and 3 in Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, CT. Please note your fellowship site preference in your application. Before applying, it is imperative to ensure your ability to attend the 8-week program in its entirety. Applicants must have achieved and maintained a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing. To apply, interested students must submit the following:

3. Two (2) reference letters from recent professors, teachers, and/or clinical staff (within the last 3 years)
4. 1-2 page essay on why you are interested in becoming an oncology nurse
5. Site preference
