Job Summary

Under general supervision, develop academic outreach programs designed to increase the number of college eligible and college bound students from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds and provide academic enrichment opportunities for targeted high school and middle school students. Assess needs of student population served, determine the best method of providing services and develop regular schedule of program activities in target schools. Advise junior and senior high school students and parents regarding higher education opportunities and programs available; develop and present workshops about post-secondary admissions requirements, student services and financial aid; assist students with the application process; represent UC Davis at workshops, meetings and conferences; develop written material for program publications; coordinate summer programs; serve on various committees to set policy, strategy and direction for programs to improve opportunities for students. Coordinate campus visits, parent conferences and other academic enrichment activities.

THIS CONTRACT APPOINTMENT ENDS ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF HIRE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION OR CONVERSION TO CAREER BASED ON FUNDING.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

* Teaching, advising, or youth development experience serving large numbers of ethnically and economically diverse students.
* Experience with program development and management; experience to design, implement, and evaluate initiatives serving diverse communities.
* Knowledge of post-secondary institutions' admissions, registration, and financial aid policies and procedures and experience communicating them to students and parents both individually and in large groups.
* Knowledge of both public schools (K-12) and the California systems of higher education (CCC, CSU, UC, and AICCU) which includes knowledge of protocol, school communities, categorical funding, and the Master Plan of Education in California.
* Communication skills to prepare written reports, proposals, correspondence, assessments, email and other materials for a variety of audiences.
* Interpersonal skills to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds to establish and maintain collaborative relationships. Knowledge of private and charter schools.
* Ability to work in CA public school system.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with California public school system.
* Experience with outreach efforts to increase educational achievement, specifically among students from diverse populations and language backgrounds.
* Experience analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and applying federal/state/university policies.
* Experience researching, identifying and validating student activities and programs.
* Knowledge of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and ability to handle and work with confidential records and materials of minors.
* Ability to speak a foreign language, preferably Spanish.
* Skills to develop innovative solutions and programs.
* Computer skills to utilize various programs and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and student database management.

Department Overview

The College Opportunity Programs works in partnership with administrators, teachers and students in specified elementary, middle and high schools in regional K-12 school districts. The goal of COP is to increase the number of students from historically low college enrollment communities who prepare for post-secondary preparation with an emphasis on college/university preparation.

Work Environment

* UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
