Network IT Intern

Provide assistance with basic network administration, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks in support of the IT networking infrastructure. This position is ideal for students interested in gaining hands-on experience in networking and IT support within a professional environment.
We offer a flexible work environment. This means working up to 2 days a week remotely and the rest of the time in the office.
Under the supervision of the Network Operations Manager, the Network IT Intern will provide support in deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting aspects of the organization's Cisco-based enterprise network. The position will also include learning opportunities related to network security, monitoring, and compliance.

This role is designed for students who are eager to learn and work collaboratively with the network team. The Network IT Intern will gain exposure to a variety of networking concepts and technologies while assisting with day-to-day operations.

"Gauges" of Responsibility-

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining network hardware, including switches, routers, and wireless access points.
  • Support the troubleshooting of network connectivity issues for end users.
  • Help configure and document basic network devices under supervision.
  • Participate in routine network monitoring tasks, including bandwidth utilization and port use analysis.
  • Support the application of network security best practices by assisting with firewall rule management and network vulnerability assessments.
  • Assist in tracking and organizing help desk tickets related to networking issues.
  • Provide general administrative and technical support to the network team, including documentation and reporting on assigned tasks.
  • Maintain a professional, team-oriented, and customer-focused approach in all interactions.

Qualifications-

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program, preferably in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of networking principles or coursework in IT is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Visio).
  • Interest in building practical IT and networking skills.

Technical Skills:

  • Basics of networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, VLANs, Wi-Fi, firewalls).
  • Exposure to tools like Wireshark, command-line troubleshooting, and ticketing systems.
  • Introduction to Cisco networking hardware and configurations.
  • Awareness of network security principles and compliance requirements (e.g., PCI, SOX).

Non-Technical Skills:

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and task management.

Schedule and Location:

  • Flexible hours to accommodate academic schedules, with an expectation of approximately 10-15 hours per week.
  • This role may involve remote work with on-site attendance at the company's headquarters in Waltham, MA.
  • This role provides an excellent opportunity for students to build foundational skills in IT networking while contributing to meaningful projects in a professional setting.
