Strauch Early Career Fellow - Art

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University (Cornell AAP) is home to nearly 1000 students, 120 faculty, and 70 staff members who come together from around the world to take up some of today's most urgent challenges and advance research, inquiry, and approaches to designing, making, and doing that build a more just and sustainable future.

A vital college at one of the nation's foremost research universities, Cornell AAP bridges fields and faculty with five departments, 19 degree programs, 18 faculty-led labs, and the Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities, a platform for building partnerships that make change in our cities and communities nationally and internationally. Cornell AAP's departments include Architecture, Art, and Planning, as well as the new multicollege Paul Rubacha Department of Real Estate, jointly led by the S.C. Johnson College of Business, and the multicollege Department of Design Tech, administered by Cornell AAP in partnership with Cornell Bowers CIS, Cornell Engineering, the College of Human Ecology, and Cornell Tech. The college is housed across three locations (Ithaca, New York City, and Rome, Italy), each with world-class facilities and cutting-edge technologies. Cornell AAP is about acts of transformation. We are committed to building a caring, inclusive, and rigorous community around our shared priorities - Creative + Critical Practices; Sustainability + Social Impact; Design + Emerging Technologies; and the Future of Cities + Development - that enable us to reimagine and reshape the world in radically new ways, every day.

The Department of Art, at the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, offers a B.F.A., an M.F.A. in Creative Visual Arts, and an M.F.A. in Image Text. The department enjoys a close relationship with diverse academic units across the university including in the humanities, sciences, and technology. Art faculty and students have access to extensive traditional and digital production facilities in the college as well as to the resources of a major research university. The department also offers a semester-long undergraduate studio program in Rome, Italy.

The Strauch fellowship centers on research and teaching under the mentorship of a senior faculty member in the department. Responsibilities will be aligned with the experiences, skills, and knowledge that are critical in preparing Fellows for future academic success and will include presenting research and work at an exhibition, community lecture or panel discussion, teaching, and full participation in departmental and college activities through their appointment. This is a salaried position with benefits and a stipend for research-related expenses. Additionally, the Fellows will have the opportunity to be part of a national cohort of other emerging scholars and practitioners participating in the Deans' Equity and Inclusion Initiative. The Initiative brings together over thirty-five leading U.S. schools and colleges of architecture, planning, art and design, dedicated to creating a community of early-career faculty from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, with attention to those underrepresented among the faculty in the field.

The Strauch Early Career Fellow in the Department of Art is expected to have an MFA in Art. They will engage in creative practice, develop and teach one course and a workshop in their area of expertise each semester, deliver a public lecture, and plan an exhibition or public project of work made during the time of the fellowship. Responsibilities include engaging in creative practice in an off campus studio provided by the College. In addition, there will be the opportunity to participate and be mentored in related departmental service such as admissions and portfolio review, and curriculum development. Applicants should have a deep knowledge of their media, but also a demonstrated familiarity with the broad range of current practices, and must be able to teach from a knowledge of art history and theory. Cornell AAP's B.F.A. and M.F.A. are both oriented toward the interrelationship and integration of interdisciplinary studio practice with content from across the university: the candidate should therefore be able to address art practice in a broad cultural, socio/political, technical, and conceptual context within an atmosphere of close faculty/student involvement and mentoring.

The candidate will advance their own creative practice even as they work with us to take the larger project of expanding imaginaries for social change forwards in a way that will support the department's goal of preparing students for art making in an increasingly diverse and inclusive world. We seek candidates with a strong interest in teaching and academic life, an active exhibition record or other modes of public artistic engagement. Because individual faculty and student practices regularly lie beyond or across these traditional categories, we encourage applications from the full range of media, practice, and background/orientation. Thus, this search is not medium specific but we will prioritize practices that can be supported by our existing college facilities.

A description of our facilities can be found here: https://aap.cornell.edu/resources/photography-labs-and-print-media-facilities and here: https://aap.cornell.edu/resources/fabrication-shops

Salary will be $65,000 and a stipend for research-related expenses is provided separately.
