JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Penn State College of Medicine, Office of the Associate Dean for Research, in Hershey, PA, is seeking a Flow Cytometry Core Manager. The position of Flow Cytometry Core Manager is open for a highly motivated individual to oversee operation of the Penn State College of Medicine Flow Cytometry Core Facility.
- Responsibilities include providing oversight of all operations within the core facility that support both the research and clinical missions of the institution and providing guidance to the flow cytometry community to ensure best practices for high quality data and sample acquisition.
- The manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining services provided to both the College of Medicine research community and the clinical laboratories that utilize the facility.
- The manager will train and supervise multiple staff critical for core operation and guide their professional development.
- The manager will be responsible for oversight of state-of-the art equipment and technology to ensure their proper maintenance and operation and oversee all aspects of quality control within the facility, including the development and improvement of SOPs for training, research applications, clinical testing and biosafety practices.
- The manager will provide consultations to customers regarding experiment design, data analysis and troubleshooting of complex approaches and provide oversight for training new users.
- The manager will work together with the Scientific Director of the Flow Cytometry Core to develop scientific direction for the core including, introduction of new services and acquisition of new state-of-the-art instrumentation.
- The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of flow cytometry experience, with a strong working knowledge of hands-on operation of both flow cytometry analyzers and cell sorters and be an effective communicator capable of providing outstanding customer service. The candidate is expected to participate in the greater flow cytometry community (eg. ISAC) to facilitate their professional development and knowledge of new technologies and practices that are state-of-the art for the field. Prior management experience is preferred but not required.
The manager oversees and advises on research project operations including study methodologies, protocol development, project deliverables and timelines, data management and analysis plans, and financial administration; provides guidance and oversight to research team members; and serves as the project point of contact with faculty, sponsors, and leadership.
- Oversee and advise on research projects and investigative studies from study initiation to conclusion including study design, data collection and management plans, technical approaches budget management, and funding opportunities
- Design project work-flow processes and project infrastructure; delegate, prioritize, and review research tasks in order to achieve project goals and improve results
- Author, review, and revise procedures for research projects and experiments; direct the standardization of procedures
- Oversee data collection, data management and reporting methods; interpret and present complex data findings to department executives, external organizations, sponsors, and the larger research community
- Research, evaluate, and advise University investigators and administrators on research methodologies, emerging trends, novel solutions, new technologies, and other resources
- Interface with external collaborators to direct and facilitate multi-site and collaborative research
- Provide guidance and oversight of compliance with government regulations and University policies on research; keep abreast of compliance regulations and changes
- Plan and administer project budgets; serve as liaison with central financial offices including research accounting, payroll, and department financial officers; create financial and statistical reports for Principal Investigators and division/department executives; analyze information and recommend spending activity
- Author papers, manuscripts, publications; represent department research interests at institutional workshops and meetings
- Collaborate with unit, department, or center leadership in order to develop strategic partnerships, advance the mission of research initiatives and projects; develop long term plans for resource allocation
- May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management
