JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Carrijo Lab in the Department of Plant Science, The Pennsylvania State University, is hiring a Research Technologist. The overarching program goal is to develop agronomic recommendations for corn, soybean, and other grain cropping systems. This position will support field, greenhouse, and laboratory research and extension activities. The individual will interact with professors, graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and collaborators outside of Penn State.

Primary duties of this position are:

50% - Implementation of research projects. This includes:

  • Coordinating research operations with field and greenhouse managers, and assisting them as needed with planting, herbicide and pesticide spraying, and harvesting.

  • Collection of data and research samples (e.g., plant, soil) using project-specific protocols.

  • Travel to off-campus research centers and cooperator farms in Pennsylvania.

  • Data compilation and analysis, and reporting of research results to stakeholders.

  • Maintenance of data and sample archives, and research protocols.

25% - Training and supervision of students. This includes:

  • Training graduate and undergraduate students on new research protocols.

  • Directly supervising undergraduate students and managing their day-to-day schedule.

  • Serving as liaison between students and principal investigator.

25% - Management of research facilities and resources, and environmental and personnel safety. This includes:

  • Ordering supplies and managing purchase orders.

  • Maintenance of inventory such as vehicles, field and laboratory equipment.

  • Serving as laboratory safety coordinator. This includes managing laboratory safety datasheets and keeping all safety documents up to date.

  • Maintenance and organization of research facilities.

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Crop and Soil Sciences, or closely related discipline and 3 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education. Experience with agronomic or related research; proficiency with Microsoft Office computer programs (Excel, Word, Power Point). A Pennsylvania Commercial Pesticide Applicators license is required within three months of hire.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$42,100.00 - $61,000.00
