Genetics Counselor

Job Description

The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling by assessing family history of patients and/or families in cases of suspected hereditary syndromes. The GC assists patients and families to comprehend if they are at increased risk of developing diseases. Recommends gene testing when appropriate and provide results and follow-up counseling and recommendations for patients.

  • Implements core GC skills and competencies which include:
  • Assesses family history, completes pedigree, and counsels patients and/or families in cases of suspected hereditary cancer syndromes; assists families to comprehend risk of an increased chance of developing cancer.
  • Recommends genetic testing as appropriate. Order gene testing. Provides disclosure of test results, the meaning of the results and follow-up counseling.
  • Provides patients recommendations for cancer screening and risk reduction strategies based on the individual's level of risk
  • Clear documentation with all elements required for new patient and result disclosure patient appointments
  • Utilize EMR as required for Genetic Counselors
  • Maintains patient data base
  • Presents patients at weekly case conference
  • Recognize need for professional growth and takes steps to achieve
  • Point person for Jefferson referring and treatment team providers for questions regarding hereditary risk and gene testing
  • Implements clinical practice under supervision from GC, MD

Education:

Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling

AND

Experience:

New graduate to 3 years' experience. Boarded/licensed experience preferred.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

Eligible for and then required Board Certification in Genetic Counseling. PA, NJ licenses and if requested Delaware
