Position Overview

The Jewish Studies Program invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for a part-time lecturer position in Jewish Studies. We are especially interested in instructors who can teach one or two courses per semester on topics related to Judaism and Jewish culture and history. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty and are typically paid on a per-course basis. Positions vary and are dependent upon need, if any. Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate courses consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.


Job Description

Teach a specified number of undergraduate courses per semester. Courses may be taught in-person, hybrid or online.

Jewish Studies Lecturer Duties:

75% - Teaching

  • Teach a specific number of three-credit-hour courses each semester. This includes three in-class academic hours per week for each three-credit-hour course.

  • Provide instruction throughout the semester. Develop assignments, administer exams, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.

  • Lecturers are expected to manage Canvas, keep student records, and submit all relevant course records.

15% - Office hours and other appointments with students

  • A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two different days.

  • The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.

10% - Other

  • Attendance at required mentoring meetings and faculty meetings as needed and determined by the Director.

  • Submission of semester/yearly reports as needed and determined by the Director.

  • Adherence to departmental, College, and University policies.


Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in the letter of application, (2) a record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.

  1. M.A. and/or Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or a related field. The Ph.D. is required for teaching graduate courses. A Master of Rabbinic Studies (MRb) may be relevant.

  1. College teaching experience, evidence of teaching competence (e.g., course evaluations; supervisor ratings).


Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or a closely related field.

  1. Experience in teaching multiple semesters of college-level undergraduate courses.

  1. Experience in teaching the specific course to be assigned.
