Job Summary

Employment Duration: 3 months

Under the supervision of the Manager, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) utilizes the nursing process to assess patient needs through observation, communication, and review of clinical data. The LVN provides nursing care in an ambulatory setting and works closely with RNs and physicians to deliver comprehensive, individualized patient care.

This role requires learning and applying Patient-Centered Medical Home Standards and the Ten Building Blocks of Primary Care. Responsibilities include medication and vaccine administration, lab result review, chart abstraction, treatments, procedures, and patient education across pediatric and adult primary care. The LVN will support multiple UCSF clinic sites and must consistently demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and strong adherence to UCSF's PRIDE values and AIDET communication practices.

The LVN interacts with a diverse, high-profile population and must be able to perform under pressure with diplomacy, compassion, and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform patient assessments based on symptoms, laboratory results, emotional state, cultural background, and socioeconomic factors.
  • Deliver nursing care in an ambulatory setting in collaboration with the care team.
  • Complete chart abstraction and maintain accurate, timely documentation.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments such as ear irrigations, wound care, and urethral catheterization.
  • Review and monitor laboratory results.
  • Provide patient and family education.
  • Support transitions of care and continuity across multiple UCSF clinic sites.
  • Utilize electronic medical record systems, including ApeX, and other UCSF programs.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service in all patient and stakeholder interactions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of pharmacology, infection control, safety, and clinical procedures.
  • Uphold Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in a Primary Care/Family Practice ambulatory setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong comfort with learning new technology and software systems.
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Trained and licensed to perform phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver highly personalized patient care.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a patient care team.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to meet physical job requirements.
  • Proficiency in APeX.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with Patient-Centered Medical Home principles.

License/Certification


  • Active Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) licensure in the State of California.
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification.
