Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

The Staff Physical Therapist (PT II) provides both direct and indirect patient care services under the general direction of the Clinical Supervisor, Physical Therapy. This role primarily works with adult and geriatric patients from diverse backgrounds, with occasional pediatric and adolescent cases.

Upon receiving written referrals, the PT II evaluates patients, establishes therapeutic goals, and develops and implements comprehensive treatment plans. Responsibilities include administering physical therapy modalities and procedures, documenting patient care, and collaborating effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. The PT II may also supervise support personnel and physical therapy students.

The Staff Physical Therapist actively participates in departmental initiatives, performance improvement activities, clinical education, and staff development.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care

  • Perform physical therapy evaluations based on physician referrals, including muscle, neurological, gait, and functional assessments.
  • Establish short- and long-term therapeutic goals in collaboration with the referring practitioner.
  • Develop and adjust treatment plans based on evaluation results and patient progress.
  • Administer direct patient care using a full range of physical therapy techniques.
  • Delegate and supervise appropriate components of treatment to support staff.
  • Complete all aspects of discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient care documentation, including progress and discharge notes and payer-required reports.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Present patient progress in rounds, clinics, and conferences as needed.
  • Demonstrate effective time management.

Education

  • Participate in staff in-service programs, meetings, and training activities.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff.
  • Provide community and departmental educational programs.
  • Provide clinical instruction to physical therapy students and other affiliated healthcare trainees.
  • Seek opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.

Departmental Contributions

  • Participate in departmental quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to departmental projects, committees, and organizational goals.
  • Represent the department professionally.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform additional duties related to patient care as required.
  • Complete tasks assigned by departmental leadership.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum of 12 months of experience as a licensed physical therapist.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to recognize signs of patient distress.
  • Possession of or eligibility for CPR certification.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing and online communication.
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, problem-solving, and self-motivation skills.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in an academic medical center.
  • Experience working within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Degree or certificate in Physical Therapy from an accredited program.

License/Certification


  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California.
