Accounts Payable Manager

Pay Range:

The UMass President's Office expects to pay within an approximate range between $90,000 and $110,000 for this position. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.

Primary Work Location:

Westborough, MA. Hybrid work schedule available.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief Procurement Officer, the Accounts Payable Manager is responsible for directing and managing the Accounts Payable department to deliver service at the highest level to clients that focuses on quality, efficiency, productivity, and cost in an environment that fosters employee engagement, supports continuous improvement, manages risks, and ensures compliance with all policies and regulations.

Essential Functions:



  • Effectively manage, support, & provide guidance around the resource requirements of the Accounts Payable team.
  • Create and maintain an engaging, collaborative, agile, customer-focused work environment.
  • Accountable to deliver on the departmental strategic objectives that were identified, delivered, and approved by the DCPO and CPO.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing process improvements throughout all aspects of the AP function.
  • Ensure all aspects of the Accounts Payable function are focused on providing customer care while delivering expert administrative services within timelines and quality standards.
  • Mindful of technological opportunities in the AP industry, understanding the requirement for automation and efficiency when applicable to improve overall, long-term performance and success of the department.
  • Responsible to leadership to be able to always identify and report on the status and performance of the accounts payable function.
  • Enable operational excellence through the analysis of performance metrics and sustained continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Examine all strategic and operational tasks within Accounts Payable to ensure efficiency is maximized.
  • Proactively monitor customer feedback / escalated issues and ensure delivery of business results.
  • Lead the development and support of the UPST strategic short- and long-term strategic goals for the Accounts Payable team.
  • Work in partnership with the various departments within the UPST to develop appropriate standard reports for service management and performance management tracking.
  • Participate in respective governing body meetings and encourage constructive feedback as requested by the Deputy Chief Procurement Officer.
  • Represent the UPST in matters of policy and/or process change that relate to accounts payable.
  • Establish internal controls and procedures to protect the assets of the University.
  • Ensure the integrity of departmental work.
  • Evaluate workload and production statistics and take appropriate action when necessary
  • Establish and deliver on departmental goals, providing appropriate metric information on a scheduled basis to ensure we are meeting targets.
  • Oversee the development of staff (and take corrective action as needed) to ensure adequate skills are available to most effectively and efficiently service the user community.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5-7 years of professional experience directly related to accounts payable or procure to pay functions.
  • 2+ years of experience in managing accounts payable or related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills needed to present or communicate effectively with all levels of management.


Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):



  • MBA
  • Professional experience in a higher education institution.
  • Experience in working in a continuous/process improvement-focused function.
  • Experience working in a shared service environment.
  • Prior experience working with PeopleSoft and Jaggaer.


Working Conditions:



  • Typical office environment
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to all UMass campuses and the Boston central office.
