Description

This is a key position in the Department of Perioperative Services. The Manager of Sterile Processing spends the majority of time (50% or more)achieving organizational objectives throughcoordinatedachievementsof Sterile Processing Supervisors and Technicians. With the SPD Director, establishes departmental goals and objectives.Manages the accountability and stewardship of departmental and organizational goals and objectives.Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined leadership standard work, utilizing metrics to demonstrate quality andproductively inthe department.

Applies managerial skillsand technical experience to oversee sterile processing department operations. Determines optimal deployment of personnel and resources to achieve quality objectives. Theincumbent has a strong background insterile processingor surgical service as a technician.

Ensure compliance with internal policy and external regulations. Incumbent isknowledgeable of regulatory requirements and best practice based on industry standards.

Incumbent hasstrong leadership skills to manage ateam of technical and administrative staff. The incumbent is actively involved in the operationsof thedepartment to ensure quality product is provided to the surgical patient. Incumbent cangenerate and discuss metrics andreports which are used to achieve departmental goals. Incumbenthas effective communication skills and knowledge ofhuman resources processes. Incumbent functions at high level of autonomy while effectively communicating with SPDDirector, and ORleadershipteam to ensure collaboration and partnership.

Incumbent possesses the ability toensure trainingof staffto performdutiesas aSterile Processing Technician to include: decontamination and/or processing of equipment and instrumentation, instrument assembly, sterilization through methods including but not limited to steam andhydrogen peroxide gas; knowledge of surgical supplies andabilityto preparecontents of case carts for surgery. Incumbent has knowledge of instrument trackingsystems.

Incumbent orients, supervises, and evaluates Central Sterile Supervisors, Specialists, and Analysts.

Other major duties include,but are not limited to, customer service and departmental efficiencies. Able to maintain, prioritize, and expedite workflow. Works with Educator/QA Manager to conduct orientation, training programs, and staffdevelopment. Works effectively with OR leadership and staff to ensure quality of surgicalinstrument trays, and makes recommendations forsurgical tray contents, care andhandling by the clinical staff.

Qualifications
  • 10 years of Operating Room or Sterile Processing and at least 3 years of management experience
  • CRCST or a certified Surgical technologist certification required
  • Strictly obeys the healthcare regulations for infection control: failure to adhere to these regulations will result in disciplinary action.
  • Properly utilizes and provides resource information regarding proper sterilization techniques, product information, equipment operation, etc. to fellow staff and other healthcare team members, serves as a resource for people needing direction as required.
  • Consistently demonstrates a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Actively participates in Quality Management and PIE programs.
  • Consistently adheres to UCLA Perioperative Services policies and procedures.
  • Attends all in-services/workshops as requested. Assists in the orientation and skill development of new staff members. Attends and participates in required fire, safety, disaster, body mechanics, etc. classes and/or drills.
  • Always ensures a safe working environment for self and co-workers. Monitors and reports unsafe acts or conditions and takes appropriate proactive steps to resolve and/or report.
  • Consistently maintains good guest relations interdepartmentally, interdepartmentally, using English language in both written and verbal format, uses good telephone etiquette, sensitive to co-workers, patients, physicians, and family members, consistently maintains a courteous and respectful manner, confidentiality of patients, healthcare or physician related information
  • Maintains a positive attitude and behavior: efficient and productive with time utilization. Strives to be a team player. Adapts to change in workload. Conducts personal business on break or lunch time.
  • Always rotates supplies, both prepackaged and interdepartmentally packaged, using the first in/first out method. Always inspects for package integrity and appropriate change of chemical indicators.
  • Always responds to the needs of all areas. If unable to meet their needs keeps them informed and offer alternatives. Prioritizes appropriately and knows when to call for assistance.
