GEL Laboratories, LLC, an affiliate of The GEL Group, Inc., is looking for a Laboratory Support Group Leader to join our team of professionals in our Charleston, SC office. This position is responsible for supervisory oversight on sampling receiving and storage, sample couriers, sample kit preparation, and shipping. The Laboratory Support Group Leader schedules and coordinates workload for the group, monitors performance of individuals, and provides feedback to group members regarding performance. Working independently, with minimal supervision, the Laboratory Support Group Leader excels at solving problems with a mission of providing excellent customer service both to GEL's clients and to laboratory personnel. The successful candidate will be an effective leader and communicator, have flexibility to come in early, stay late, and work weekends based on shipments of samples needing to be processed, and possess a general understanding of laboratory protocols and procedures.

We offer deep expertise in environmental chemistry, PFAS, radiochemistry, radiobioassay, hemp analysis, and other specialty analysis. The Laboratory Support Group Leader will be responsible for:



  • Overseeing the receipt of samples from clients and the inspection of samples for proper containers, temperature, preservatives, and overall compliance with requirements.
  • Demonstrating strong troubleshooting abilities, clearly conveying issues and practical solutions, particularly in situations where client sample information is incomplete or unclear.
  • Acting as liaison between the support group and the laboratory group leaders, project management, waste management, and marketing groups.
  • Allocating sample receiving, bottle preparation, courier, and sample management staff as appropriate to address peak workloads and vacation periods.
  • Coordinating with the safety group regarding all potentially hazardous samples before releasing them to the receiving team and laboratory for safe handling. Training others in a particular area of expertise.
  • Communicating with external customers (i.e., clients or auditors).
  • Performing complex troubleshooting processes to improve operating efficiency.
  • Managing special projects.
  • Developing and following standard operating procedures.
  • Completing sample receipt forms based on method requirements and documenting any deviations.
  • Demonstrating and supporting GEL core values.
  • Conducting tasks that support other operations in the laboratory.

Qualifications for Laboratory Support Group Leader:



  • Bachelor of Science, preferably in Chemistry or Biology, or related educational background, with a minimum of ten years of related experience.
  • Demonstrates analytical skills, along with advanced math and computer skills.
  • Exhibits organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Willing to work a schedule that does include weekends, as necessary.


Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

This position requires working in a busy production laboratory successfully receiving and processing samples from around the world. Safety is a priority and negligence is not tolerated. Safety equipment is provided, and use is mandatory.

The physical demands outlined in this job posting are representative of those that are required for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:



  • Mobility to work in a primarily warehouse environment (hot in summer/cold in winter)
  • Precise hand/eye coordination and finger/hand manipulation
  • Work may involve exposure to laboratory chemicals and regulated hazardous or radioactive materials, with all activities performed under established safety, training, and regulatory controls.
  • Use of office and laboratory equipment and stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
