The Miami Herald is seeking a highly productive, ambitious reporter to cover education in South Florida. This is a demanding beat for a journalist who thrives on momentum and knows how to own a complex subject day in and day out. We’re looking for a reporter who can consistently deliver — breaking news, smart dailies, quick-turn explainers and service journalism for families — and who understands that strong beats are built through volume, urgency and follow-through as well as depth. The ideal candidate is an energetic multitasker who can manage a fast-moving beat, identify multiple storylines at once, and keep them moving. You should be a resourceful digger with an instinct for accountability reporting, a compelling writer who can clearly explain complex systems, and an audience-first journalist who knows how to spot stories readers need now. The education beat sits at the intersection of politics, culture and family life, nowhere more so than in Florida, a state shaped by immigration and repeatedly thrust into national culture wars. We are looking for a reporter who can cut through the noise with frequent, authoritative coverage — producing service and utility stories parents and teachers rely on, while also driving accountability reporting that explains how policy decisions are actually affecting classrooms. A core focus of this beat is Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the third-largest school district in the United States. This is a high-impact assignment with no shortage of daily news, exclusive story opportunities and enterprise threads for a reporter eager to build expertise and visibility. This has been a vital beat for our subscribers, and expectations are thus high. We expect this reporter to deliver an average of 4 to 6 stories a week, with a mix of quick hits, dailies and deeper reporting. At the Miami Herald, we prioritize impactful accountability reporting, strong storytelling and a relentless focus on readers. As a digital-first Mc Clatchy newsroom, we expect our journalists to publish often, experiment with formats, use audience data to guide coverage decisions, and take advantage of emerging tools — including AI — to work smarter and reach more readers. We are looking for someone excited to work in a bilingual newsroom serving one of the most diverse communities in the country. Language skills — Spanish, Portuguese, French/Creole — all add value in South Florida. Mc Clatchy Media’s journalists are expected to take advantage of opportunities to ethically harness and leverage artificial intelligence and other automation to enhance and elevate their work and to find efficiencies that free them to focus on source-building and high quality, deeply reported journalism.
