Summary of Duties:



  • Provides a timely medical/forensic examination of the Sexual Assault patient using a compassionate and victim sensitive approach.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provides a complete medical/forensic examination to sexual assault/forensic patients that present to the Emergency Department. Stays within the guidelines of the Sexual Assault Policy and procedures.


  • Provides a non-judgmental examination with appropriate evidence collection to suspects of crimes.



Additional Job Functions and Responsibilities:



  • Must be willing to take on call responsibilities and be within 30-minute response time when on call
  • Prepares facility for patient care process
  • Documents medical history
  • Performs physical exam including collection of laboratory and forensic evidence and provides treatment according to established protocols
  • Formulates and implements discharge plan
  • Participates in ongoing patient care review process
  • Participates in ongoing legal process and court appearances as required by the state
  • Participates in monthly staff meetings
  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to take initiative or innovation
  • Provides constructive suggestions to improve operations and services
  • Participates in formulations of plans to improve care and working conditions
  • Able to problem solve
  • Participates as a preceptor to nursing and medical personnel as directed
  • Demonstrates teamwork and cooperation with supervisors, subordinates and peers
  • Efficient use of materials and equipment
  • Provides for fair and courteous treatment of patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality
  • Practices within JCSART/SANE policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change
  • Demonstrates sound clinical professional judgment and maintains a high standard of personal credibility
  • Exhibits professional character, attitude and appearance. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities
  • Pursues ongoing professional growth opportunities
  • Documents completely and stores patient records in confidential, private area
  • Responsible for examinations of patients 13 yrs old and greater
  • Assists pediatrician with evidence collection in forensic exam of pediatric patients



Minimum Qualifications:



  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the State of Iowa
  • Preferable minimum of 2 years of RN experience.
  • Successful completion of a 40 hr+ SANE Training Program.
  • Successful completion of a 40 hr + SANE/SART practicum.
  • Documented clinical competency and professional accountability.
  • Mastery of written and verbal communication.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.



*This position reports to the Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team (JCSART) Coordinator
