Description

The Director of Safety is a member of Husky Terminal's Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading comprehensive safety, risk management, and emergency preparedness programs across all terminal operations. This role serves as the primary safety business partner and subject matter expert for marine terminal safety, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and maritime regulatory requirements while promoting a strong, proactive safety culture in complex, high-hazard, 24/7 port operations.

This role requires a results-driven leader who demonstrates initiative, confidence, and a strong sense of urgency in achieving safety and operational objectives. The Director of Safety must be able to make timely decisions, solve complex problems, and lead safety initiatives in a fast-paced, high-risk operational environment. Success in this role requires the ability to adapt to changing conditions, balance multiple priorities, influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization, and inspire a shared commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Compensation: $146,800 to $211,400, target range $150,000 - $180,000, annually, depending on experience

What You'll Do




  • Lead and execute company-wide safety strategy, programs, and initiatives



  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, USCG, EPA, and maritime regulations



  • Oversee risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions



  • Drive emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response coordination



  • Partner with leadership, Operations, HR, and represented workforce (ILWU and IAM) to promote a strong safety culture



  • Develop and deliver safety training, meetings, and awareness initiatives



  • Conduct safety audits and inspections; enforce standards and stop unsafe work when needed



  • Analyze safety data, track trends, and provide insights to leadership



  • Manage safety budget, resources, and equipment needs



  • Build relationships with external agencies and represent the company in industry forums

Education:



  • Bachelor's degree required in Occupational Safety, or a related field.


Related experience:



  • At least 5 years of experience in a safety leadership role, preferably in marine terminal


Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Ability to obtain the following certifications:



  • CPR Instructor Certification Required
  • Certified Safety Professional
  • Competent Person - Fall Protection
  • OSHA 5410 Certified

Technical Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have



  • Knowledge of terminal, stevedore and vessel operations and equipment, physical and security
  • Knowledge of Maintenance and Repair activities that occur on a container terminal.
  • The ability to analyze collective bargaining agreements and interpretation of intent, spirit, and terms of contract to apply on the job safety standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state OSHA, S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.

  • Requires physical ability to access ships, cranes, the yard and office
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving, heavy
  • The ability to climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment
  • The ability to lift 50 pounds
  • The ability to use a computer/keyboard


Work Environment:
