About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking anAssociate Project Archaeologist for our Salt Lake City, Utah office. The Associate Archaeologist will be a core member of the Cultural Resources Program, responsible for managing small to medium cultural resources projects, assisting senior project managers on larger projects, capturing future work through business development and proposal work, participating in fieldwork, support report writing with research and technical writing, oversee quality assurance/ quality control review, and managing client, agency, and tribal relationships. This role is ideal for an archaeologist who has a strong foundation in cultural resources fieldwork and technical writing and who has already stepped into project management. As an Associate Project Archaeologist, you will play a key role in supporting and managing cultural resources projects across the region while continuing to grow your technical and leadership skills.

The candidate should expect to be hands-on from the start of a project in the proposal stage, manage pre-field tasks, participate in fieldwork, and manage or write the report. This is a regular (with benefits) full-time position. Hourly pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience and will range from $29.87/hour to $38.11/hour. It is preferred that the selected applicant reside within the greater Great Basin area.

What you will accomplish

  • Manage all aspects of cultural resources projects successfully, including budgeting and audits, scheduling projects from start to finish, participating and leading fieldwork, writing technical reports, and conducting historical and precontact research.
  • Gather new work by working on opportunities starting from the business development step through go/no-gos, budgeting, risk assessment, and proposal reviews.
  • Work with clients and agency representatives directly for successful project implementation. SWCA strongly encourages people with good communication skills.
  • Assist with technical science-based reports with work plans, literature reviews, context development, site descriptions, NRHP evaluations, and database work with oversight from subject matter experts.
  • Delegate and manage reporting writers and fieldwork staff.
  • Nurture and develop client relationships.
  • Oversee and conduct fieldwork and deliverables, adhering to SWCA's Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) program.
  • Supervise personnel in the field, office, and/or laboratory.
  • Collaborate with SWCA's personnel across role levels and disciplines.
  • Maintain SWCA's high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance.
  • Be motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team.
  • Work independently in a responsible manner, resolving project challenges.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, develop safety plans (when applicable), and anticipate potential safety hazards.
  • Depending upon a project, an element of your job could be to supervise and lead a small crew while conducting archaeological field work such archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery. This includes:
    • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
    • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
    • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
    • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
    • monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when corrective action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in CRM in a supervisory and management capacity.Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience managing CRM tasks, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
  • Experience with Section 106 and Historic Preservation regulatory requirements in the Great Basin region.
  • Prior primary report authorship in a CRM context for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies. Strong technical writing skills.
  • Has provided QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports.
  • Has the ability to get on SWCA's Utah and/or Nevada BLM archaeological survey permit as a Field Director or PI.

An employee in this Salt Lake City, UT-based position can expect an hourly wage of $29.87-$38.11/hour.
