Job Description

We have multiple openings for Sr. Mechanical Technologists. You will develop, test, troubleshoot, evaluate, operate, and maintain experimental, research, and prototype equipment associated with mechanical systems in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS). This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

In this role, you will

  • Independently fabricate, assemble, and disassemble complex and precise mechanical components and systems.
  • Operate and maintain fabrication equipment, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Provide advanced technical support across a wide variety of activities, including vacuum systems, electrical work, and plumbing and cooling installations.
  • Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and comprehensive troubleshooting of complex equipment, to ensure reliable operation and rapid restoration of service.
  • Prepare and follow instructional guides to assemble, repair, calibrate, operate and maintain equipment and systems.
  • Test, diagnose, maintain and repair complex pressure systems, instrumentation, control, and test equipment.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to resolve complex mechanical issues and improve system performance and reliability.
  • Develop and author operational procedures, technical manuals, and qualifications standards.
  • Plan, organize, mentor, and lead projects of limited scope to meet defined objectives and schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate's degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Substantial experience and advanced skills in mechanical fabrication and/or assembly.
  • Advanced knowledge of electro-mechanical technology.
  • Advanced experience working with pressurized systems and leak testing equipment.
  • Advanced experience in mechanical design, fabrication, and opto-mechanical mechanisms.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Effective written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and related mechanical experience.
  • Experience in 3D CAD, machining, mechanical assembly and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience in the operation of precision systems/mechanisms.

Pay Range

$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
