Work Type: Intern - This is a seasonal position working up to 40 hours per week/up to 26 weeks.

Nature of Work: This technical working involving the design, development, maintenance, and production of geospatial databases, hard copy and digital map products, and web maps and apps within an enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment.

Education and Experience: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

Must be currently enrolled in college for Geography, GIS, or related field and/or beginner use of GIS Software data.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
  • Ability to meet the department's qualifications to perform the assigned duties
  • Ability to understand written or oral instructions
  • Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with other city employees and the public
  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software
  • Ability to prioritize and manage work time to keep projects moving according to time lines and be completed by preset deadlines
  • Ability to reach, walk, or sit from 51 to 75% of the time; to stand from 26 to 50% of the time; and to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, push, pull, lift, and type up to 25% of the time
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, to use up to ten (10) pounds of force to move objects up to 33% of the time, and to use lesser amounts of force to move objects from 34 to 100% of the time

Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this classification.)

  • To learn and assist in designing creating, updating, and maintaining digital geospatial datasets using various information sources according to documents procedures and policies, including digitizing from hard copy records, assimilation of existing digital datasets, processing data collected in the field, and intergrating related tabular databases.
  • Interprets and applies information from a number of sources into the GIS, including engineering plans, floodplain maps, as-built plans, surveys, plats, tabular reports, and AutoCAD datasets; consults appropriate internal staff and/or originator to ensure accurate interpretation of information.
  • Prepares hard copy and digital maps to meet the specific needs of internal users, projects, and publications.
  • Documents GIS-related feedback from internal and external users, and, if necessary, provides prompt action or information based on user feedback.
  • Assists staff and the public with GIS information requests, including hard copy and digital map production, GIS database queries, geospatial analysis, training, and intermediate technical support.
  • Responsible for the overall maintenance, currency, and accuracy of departmental GIS data layers; responsible for providing access and training to support departmental users.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with GIS Coordinator, GIS staff, and GIS Steering Committee members to determine departmental GIS needs, discuss potential data and application intergration, and align actions with overall City Enterprise GIS initiatives
  • Maintain regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties assigned as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license

Pay Range: $28.13 hourly
