Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary
Supports research programs by providing comprehensive animal care services, including procurement, housing, and health monitoring of laboratory animals (including rodents).

The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of laboratory animals in compliance with all federal, state, and institutional regulations. This role ensures proper animal husbandry, sanitation, and accurate record keeping to support research operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily animal care, including feeding, watering, and cage changing.
  • Perform sanitation of animal rooms, cages, and equipment per SOPs.
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves for sterilization.
  • Monitor and report animal health concerns to veterinary and research staff.
  • Maintain accurate records (per-diems, feed logs, health surveillance, environmental logs, animal receipt/disposition).
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and protocols.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and equipment.
  • Support research activities with basic technical procedures as needed.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and report issues promptly.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or lab animal sanitation experience.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry practices and multi-species care.
  • Familiarity with sanitation procedures, disinfectants, and sterilization equipment.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance (federal/state guidelines).
  • Ability to identify and communicate animal health concerns.
  • Basic computer skills (email, record systems, barcode scanning, electronic reporting).
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or in a team
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand/walk on hard surfaces up to 7 hours/day.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, and reaching overhead.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs and push/pull heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to wear PPE (protective clothing, gloves, masks, respirators as required).
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification + 1 year experience,
      or
    • 2 years of relevant animal care experience,
      or
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
  • Adherence to workplace policies (no eating/drinking in animal areas, no smoking on campus).
  • Consistent satisfactory performance during probationary period.
