Description

The department of Facilities Operations at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Painter / Maintenance Worker I.

About the Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Manager I or Trade Specialist, the duties of this position requires the individual to assist with a variety of painting and masonry tasks related to maintenance and repair of building as outlined by University guidelines.

What You'll Do

  • Will assist the painters in painting, staining, sanding and varnishing of all areas on campus. Performs work with rollers, brushes and sponges to apply paints to virus surfaces
  • Will assist in the hanging of wallpaper and boarders.
  • Assists with the repair of plaster and drywall and the sanding of all surfaces smooth, making it ready for paint.
  • May assist with the sealing of asbestos walls, ceilings, and doors when deemed necessary and safe to do so.
  • Helps with the mixing of concrete, mortar, plaster and all paints
  • Helps with finishing and refinishing of wooden items such as furniture, cabinets, doors and frames. Prepares surfaces for appropriate finishes (sanding, chemical cleaning, etc.)
  • Assists in the removal and installation of wall hangings objects such as pictures, bulletin boards, coat racks, etc., secure loose trim and base boards, etc.
  • Will use a caulking gun to make a variety of repairs
  • Will be required to assist in the following duties: Install a variety of ceramic tile in swimming pool and restroom areas, perform tuck-pointing on masonry walls and surfaces; help with installation of new concrete and also the repair of older concrete.
  • Assists in the assembling of scaffoldings-type including but not limited to rolling, pipe, stretch-boards and kick-boards.
  • Must be able to perform duties from various ladders, ladder jacks, and A-frame ladders where applicable, and perform work from a bucket/hydraulic boom truck.
  • Develops requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from the warehouse to ensure timely delivery and sequencing
  • May be required to move, load and carry all materials and equipment necessary to complete all phases of assigned painting, maintenance and construction projects. May be required to assist in the effort of moving any existing conditions, which interfere with the flow of the project. When project is completed, work site must be lift in a clean and orderly fashion.

  • Will work with student work force as needed
  • Must be able to respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.
  • May be required to assist in duties in other areas and units. Such as housekeeping, renew crew and window cleaning crew. Also it may require working on both campuses on any given day.

Pay Grade: 9

Hours: Monday thru Friday 6a-2p

Qualifications
  • High School education or equivalent. Some basic understanding of the painters trade and knowledge of plaster, drywall and concrete repair.

  • A minimum of six (6) months in the following:
    • Experience in applying paint with brushes, rollers, using masking tapes and drywall finishing tools. Mixing paints and plasters.
    • Experience in sanding finishes in preparation of painting. Experience in removing switch-plate covers, bulletin boards, coat racks, and wall accessories.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment

  • Some knowledge of warehousing procedures
  • Ability to climb heights around 10 feet
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions
  • Ability work with people in stressful environment
  • Ability to have excellent eye to hand coordination
  • Ability to hear and interpret sounds in work area and verbal instructions
  • Ability to use logical problem solving techniques
  • Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work in uncomfortable positions as may be required by job assignment
  • Ability to work with multi-crafted personnel
  • Ability to carry heavy awkward objects
  • Ability to stoop, bend, walk, crawl, etc. over rough or slippery surfaces
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above average work standards
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts and materials
  • Ability to organize workflow to ensure work is completed in a timely manner
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical skills
  • Ability to operate manual and power hand tools
  • Ability to understand MDS sheets
  • Ability to work with student workers

Physical Demands:

  • Considerable physical strength, lifting 50-75 pounds, balancing, climbing, turning, kneeling, standing, stooping, and crouching in tight spaces.
  • Requires manual dexterity / coordination
