JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

INVESTIGATOR

Chicago Fire Department

Internal Affairs Division

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $63,504

Under supervision, investigates complaints relating to City of Chicago Public Safety Department personnel involving allegations of official misconduct, residency violations, criminal activity, or violations of City of Chicago Personnel Rules and/or departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Investigates internal allegations of criminal activity, violations of administrative and personnel rules, and other matters as assigned

* Interviews with complaints, witnesses, and employees

* Handles members of the public as complainants and witnesses

* Conducts site visits and canvas areas to collect physical evidence and examine records and related documents

* Performs moving and stationary surveillances

* Conducts background investigations as part of the pre-employment process and interviews candidates and potential employees

* Liaises with criminal investigators and prosecutors on criminal investigations

* Interviews all parties involved in formal complaints of sexual harassment or violence in the workplace

* Prepares detailed investigation reports using case management systems, documenting findings clearly and accurately

* Participates in on-call rotation responding to incumbent drug testing pursuant to labor agreements and department general orders for fitness for duty issues or motor vehicle accidents

* Testifies in court, at arbitrations, Personnel Board hearings, or other legal proceedings

* Maintains records of investigations, correspondence, and related case documentation

* Assists Investigative Specialists and supervisors in the conduct of large-scale and complex investigations

* Obtains and reviews reports, physical evidence, and electronic records maintained by other agencies related to investigations

* Understands and applies Rules and Regulations as well as DHR personnel rules in administrative investigations

* Operates drug testing and fingerprinting equipment commensurate with the legal requirements for the conduct of those examinations

* Collaborates with attorneys to prepare and present investigative findings at arbitrations and hearings

* Monitors investigations from inception to closure to ensure timely completion

3510 S. Michigan, Chicago, IL 60653 /Citywide

Days: Monday - Friday

Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Hours: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (on-call rotation)

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Five (5) years of work experience in the conduct of investigations of criminal or fraudulent activity OR five (5) years of work experience in the performance of fact finding analyses and investigative research and reporting, OR

* Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree in the Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Human Resources, or a directly related field, PLUS three (3) years of work experience in the conduct of investigations of criminal or fraudulent activity OR three (3) years of work experience in the performance of fact finding analyses and investigative research and reporting, OR

* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree or higher in the Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Human Resources or a directly related field, PLUS one (1) year of work experience in the conduct of investigations of criminal or fraudulent activity OR one (1) year of work experience in the performance of fact finding analyses and investigative research and reporting

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. Interviewed applicants possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview will be selected.

The Chicago Fire Department may request that successful candidates pass a drug screen and background investigation. Persons offered employment must pass all pre-employment exams prior to appointment.
