COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INTERN

The City of Waukesha has an immediate opening for a Community Development Intern. This is a paid position in the Planning Division with a focus on current planning, downtown revitalization, and events.

This position would be an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for exposure to a wide variety of planning and community development tasks, as well as those considering work focusing on Downtown revitalization, such as a Main Street community or Business Improvement District.



The primary duties include:

  • Assisting staff with Riverside Rhythms, our weekly downtown summer lunchtime concert series, and Wauk-Tober, our fall wine and beer walk.
  • Reviewing current planning applications, preparing staff reports, and presenting findings to the Plan Commission and other boards and commissions.
  • Answering zoning and planning related questions.
  • Zoning and sign code interpretation and enforcement.
  • Conducting research on planning and economic development related topics.
  • Assisting staff with weekly Downtown business visits as part of our business recruitment and retention and Downtown marketing strategy.
  • Assisting staff with our Affordable Housing loan program.
  • Developing Downtown design guidelines.


Minimum Requirements

  • Applicants should be currently enrolled in, or entering a bachelor's degree or master's degree program in urban planning, geography, urban studies, public administration, or a closely related field by the fall of 2026.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of ESRI ArcMap desirable.
  • Knowledge of basic urban planning and zoning principles.
  • Strong research, writing, analytical and presentation skills.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills to be able to field questions from various stakeholders and assist staff at public meetings.
  • Written communication skills, including the ability to create reports, letters, and presentations and documents.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Availability to attend periodic evening meetings.
