Registered Nurse - Cardiac Catheterization

Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide safe and therapeutic patient care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams, carrying out established nursing procedures and performing related duties as required. Provides care for patients with complex needs under appropriate guidance and assists in the management of care delivered by other members of the nursing team.

The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as part of the interdisciplinary team caring for patients undergoing procedures or examinations in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL) and/or Cardiology Department across all sites. Responsibilities include preparing patients prior to radiologic procedures, supporting care during procedures, and providing post-procedural care. The RN also assists in the management of patient care during moderate sedation and anesthesia cases.

This role requires a dedicated professional committed to delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment, with flexibility to orient and work across all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Required Qualifications

  • Flexibility to orient and work across all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience in an acute care hospital, including at least one (1) year of recent critical care experience with demonstrated knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring
  • Minimum of one (1) year of directly related RN experience in a Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab, Interventional Radiology (IR), or Cardiac Catheterization Lab
  • Minimum of three (3) years of combined experience in PACU, ICU, CCU, and/or Cardiac Catheterization Lab
  • Ability to provide direct patient care in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cardiology Department across all phases of care (pre-procedural, intra-procedural, and post-procedural)
  • Ability to wear a lead apron as required for Interventional Radiology, Neuro Interventional Radiology, and Diagnostic Radiology procedures
  • Ability to monitor patient condition and vital signs before, during, and after procedures
  • Ability to administer medications and treatments as prescribed
  • Ability to educate patients and families regarding procedures, care plans, and recovery processes
  • Experience maintaining accurate and detailed patient records and documentation
  • Participation in departmental meetings and quality improvement initiatives
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Availability to participate in on-call and late stay shifts
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask and work independently in a high-pressure environment
  • Basic computer keyboard skills and general PC proficiency

Licensure and Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Previous RN experience in pre- and post-procedure care of adult interventional cardiology patients
  • Previous RN experience in adult cardiac catheterization labs
  • RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) and/or RCES (Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist) certification

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
