Position Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for leading the company's accounting operations and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting. This role has full ownership of the monthly close process, including account reconciliations, consolidations, financial reporting, and compliance with applicable accounting standards such as ASC 842.
The Director of Accounting will oversee accounting policies, internal controls, and financial processes while managing a team responsible for the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements. This position works closely with executive leadership, FP&A, auditors, and cross-functional teams to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
- Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
- Review and approve journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
- Maintain and improve the close calendar and close process efficiency.
- Prepare and review internal financial reporting packages for senior leadership.
- Lead variance analysis and provide insight into key financial drivers.
Account Reconciliations
- Oversee preparation and review of balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Ensure reconciliation processes are completed timely and properly documented.
- Investigate and resolve reconciling items and unusual account activity.
- Maintain strong controls around account certification.
Consolidations
- Manage multi-entity financial consolidations, including elimination entries and intercompany transactions.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment across all legal entities.
- Maintain consolidation systems and processes.
- Coordinate with international or subsidiary accounting teams when applicable.
Technical Accounting & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Oversee ongoing accounting for ASC 842 including:
- Lease classification
- Lease liability and right-of-use asset accounting
- Lease disclosures
- Research technical accounting issues and document accounting memos.
- Maintain accounting policy documentation and ensure consistent application.
Audit & Internal Controls
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Lead annual financial statement audits and interim reviews.
- Ensure compliance with internal control frameworks.
- Implement and maintain strong financial controls over reporting processes.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee general ledger management and chart of accounts governance.
- Supervise accounting for:
- Fixed assets and depreciation
- Prepaids and accruals
- Intercompany transactions
- Revenue and expense recognition
- Monitor cash reconciliation and treasury accounting activities.
- Ensure proper documentation and audit trail for accounting transactions.
Process Improvement & Systems
- Identify and implement process improvements to shorten close cycles.
- Optimize accounting systems, reporting tools, and automation.
- Support ERP implementations or upgrades.
- Drive best practices in accounting workflows and documentation.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
- Establish performance goals and ensure accountability.
- Build scalable accounting processes to support company growth.
- Partner with FP&A, tax, and operational teams on financial initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
- CPA strongly preferred
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- 4+ years in accounting leadership roles
- Strong experience managing month-end close and consolidations
- Hands-on experience with lease accounting under ASC 842
- Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or similar)
- Public accounting background preferred
