Overview

A Specimen Processor I prepares and handles specimens received for testing.

Responsibility

  1. Works under the direct supervision of an employee or supervisor who is trained and competent in all relative procedures and processes pertaining to accessioning as well as other assigned processes.
  2. Prepares and handles specimens for testing:
    1. Assigns specimens an internal tracking number (accession ID).
    2. Compares and verifies identifiers on specimens match the test order.
    3. Ensures specimens are labeled appropriately.
    4. Scans, files, and electronically saves paperwork received with specimens.
    5. Transports specimens to testing labs.
    6. Performs other duties as assigned.
  3. Maintains competency in all assigned laboratory policies and procedures.
  4. Observes all compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly those associated to data security and patient confidentiality.
  5. Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with co-workers and other staff.
  6. Meets productivity and quality standards/rates set by the department and lab operations.
  7. Works with team members to resolve department problems and help implement improvement projects.

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  2. Data entry experience preferred.
  3. Excellent organizational, communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills.
  4. Detail oriented with the ability to multitask.
  5. Basic computer knowledge needed.

Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements: Medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently.

Physical Requirements: Stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching, and repetitive motion. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.

Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions: Exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humidity, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and radiant energy hazards.

OSHA Category I: Duties performed routinely requires exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.
