The Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) provides professional industrial hygiene oversight and is responsible for the development, execution, review, and approval of all industrial hygiene sampling, monitoring, and reporting activities to ensure worker protection, regulatory compliance, and proper waste characterization.



Responsibilities

Industrial Hygiene Oversight

    Direct and oversee all preabatement, inprocess, and postabatement industrial hygiene activities for hazardous materials.
  • Provide professional judgment for exposure assessment, containment effectiveness, worker protection measures, and control strategies.
  • Maintain responsibility for compliance with OSHA, WISHA (Washington Administrative Code), and contractspecific lead and hazardous materials requirements.

Sampling, Testing, and Monitoring

  • Develop, review, and approve industrial hygiene sampling plans, including air, surface, media, and waste sampling.
  • Oversee preabatement hazardous materials characterization for lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, arsenic, beryllium, and PCBs.
  • Direct and approve worker exposure monitoring, ambient air monitoring, containment performance monitoring, and visible emissions monitoring.
  • Review laboratory analytical results and interpret data relative to applicable regulatory thresholds and action levels.

Reporting and Documentation

  • May include the review, sign, and certify all industrial hygiene reports, including:
    • PreAbatement (Start) Reports
    • PostAbatement / PostBlasting Reports
    • Air, media, and exposure monitoring summaries
    • Waste characterization and disposal documentation
  • Ensure reports accurately document sampling locations, methods, laboratory analyses, results, deviations, and compliance status.
  • Support preparation of project submittals that require CIH review or approval prior to mobilization.

Worker Protection and Compliance

  • Review and approve Worker Protection Plans, Respiratory Protection Plans, and Airborne Sampling Plans.
  • Provide industrial hygiene input for containment, ventilation, negative pressure systems, and emissions control.
  • Confirm that abatement activities remain within permissible exposure limits and contractspecified thresholds.
  • Support corrective actions and work stoppage recommendations if containment failure or exposure exceedances occur.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Active Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational safety, or a related scientific discipline (Master's degree preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience supporting lead paint abatement and industrial hazardous materials projects.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA Lead Standards, Washington WAC requirements, and industrial abatement best practices.
  • Experience reviewing laboratory data, exposure assessments, and industrial hygiene reports.

Physical & Site Requirements

  • Ability to support industrial work environments.
  • Ability to review and assess work performed within active abatement and containment areas (as required).
  • Willingness to support project schedules and reporting deadlines associated with abatement work.

The pay range for this Washington position is $70.00- $80.00 per hour; based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Medical, dental, and vision insurance are also offered to full-time employees, along with Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts, with employee and employer contributions. NV5 provides 3 weeks of Paid Time Off a year for full-time hourly employees along with 8 paid holidays a year and Flexible Time Off plan for full-time salary employees along with 6 paid holidays a year. 401(k) savings plan; Company Paid Basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance; Company Paid Short-term and long-term disability insurance are also provided.
