About the Job

Residential and Community Life are core components of the UMN Morris student experience - 90% of first-years and 50% of all students live on-campus, without a housing requirement. The Wellbeing Area Coordinator provides oversight for and manages 2-4 Residential Life buildings/areas and supervises 10-15 student staff members. They establish and help to sustain welcoming, inclusive residential communities that foster student wellbeing and success and advance the campus mission, vision, and strategic plan. This position collaborates with the Student Life CARE and Academic Alert Teams, assisting with student support and case management. Responsibilities may evolve to meet emerging campus needs and utilize the successful candidate's strengths, skills, and interests. This 12-month, annually renewable live-in, academic professional appointment (9703RLResidential Life Professional 2) reports to the Residential and Community Life Associate Director.

Job Duties

Community Life Development and Residential Life Programs and Operations (35%)

  • Develop and assist with implementing Residential Life student engagement programs and initiatives encouraging student learning, persistence, and success.

  • Mentor and assist student staff in developing engaging programs on timely, relevant topics (e.g., making friendships, healthy time management, increasing intercultural competencies, practicing problem-solving skills, adopting wellbeing practices, engaging with mental and physical health resources, utilizing academic support resources) that show a responsiveness to student needs.

  • Teach a Morris 1101 college transition and success course section (1 credit); engage with the Morris 1101 instructor group; serve as a primary University staff resource and mentor for approximately 15 first-year students (Master's degree required).

  • Promote and encourage resident engagement in Residential Life and University programs, as well as support and attend key campus programs, meetings, and activities (e.g., Campus Assembly, the Healing Ceremony, Homecoming, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, Honors and Awards, Commencement).

  • Solicit residents' feedback on their experience, area programming, and community building. Ensure program tracking, assist with on-going program assessment/ evaluation.

  • Maintain availability and accessibility to area residents through office hours, community walk-throughs, and resource sharing about Welcome Week and move-in, food resources during University breaks, and preparation for closing.

  • Work with University departments and services to design or collaborate on programming initiatives and campus resources for residential life students.

  • Participate actively in ORL weekly meetings, Student Affairs division meetings, shared University governance opportunities, and campus-wide initiatives that require Residential Life representation and/or knowledge.

  • Serve in the Student Life OnCall rotation with other Residential Life and Student Affairs professional staff (approximately 2-3 weeks per semester).

  • Assist in developing and implementing wellbeing initiatives.

  • Address resident or community conflict, including the use of mediation, dialogue, talking circles, forums, or other restorative justice practices.

  • Serve as an informal hearing officer for lowerlevel Residential Life policy violations.

  • Collaborate with the Housing Operations Coordinator on room changes, emergency housing needs, and occupancy management within assigned residential areas.

  • Represent Residential and Community Life at campus events such as Admitted Student Day, New Student Orientation, and Student Employment Fair.

  • Lead the summer residential experience; provide camps/conferences operations support.

  • Meet regularly with the Housing Operations Coordinator to ensure responsible management of program and activity budgets.

Residential Life Student Staff Supervision & Development (35%)

  • Supervise 10-15 student Community Development Assistants, Building Advisors, and Community Advisors. Foster a supportive, growthoriented learning environment.

  • Support facilitation of weekly area staff meetings; conduct biweekly one-on-one meetings with student staff.

  • Develop and lead ongoing leadership development workshops, training, and learning activities; assist with all aspects of Fall and January Student Staff Training.

  • Provide consistent student staff mentorship, feedback, and performance evaluation.

  • Participate in student staff recruitment, interviewing, and selection.

  • Serve as a resource on university and ORL policies, procedures, and expectations.

Wellness Coordination & Case Management Support (30%)

  • Provide lower to midlevel case management support for students experiencing academic, personal, social, or wellbeing challenges.

  • Assist students in navigating campus resources related to mental health, basic needs, academic support, identitybased support, and wellbeing.

  • In consultation with the Associate Director, assist CARE Team, Alert Team and other partners with resident wellness checks; provide appropriate follow-up and resources..

  • Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Student Affairs, Student Counseling, Student Success Center, Health Services, Equity, Diversity & Intercultural Programs, One Stop Student Services) to coordinate care and support student success.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of student interactions, referrals, and followup plans in accordance with university protocols.

  • Identify trends in student needs; contribute to proactive wellbeing programming and resource development.

  • Support basicneeds: food access, emergency housing, and resource referrals.

  • Lead and collaborate with campus/community partners on wellness initiatives and events (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug prevention/education, bystander education, and violence prevention.)

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least one year of relevant experience

  • Knowledge of residential life operations in a college or university setting

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively, with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment

  • Ability to work with diverse populations and create welcoming, inclusive environments

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master's degree in Education, Student Counseling, Social Work, Public Health, Health Promotion, Public Administration, or related fields (Master's required for teaching)

  • Student or professional experience in residential life, student affairs, or a related field

  • Training and/or experience in student development, community building, wellbeing practices, basicneeds support, conflict resolution, and sustainability

  • Experience with oncall response, mental health support, non-clinical case management, or care coordination

  • Familiarity with student conduct, restorative justice, and critical incident response

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $42000-$49000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
