About the College/Unit/Department
The Franklin College Office of Information Technology (Franklin OIT) is a member of the Dean's Office and employs more than 40 full-time employees and student workers. As a Help Desk Institute ( HDI) Team Certified Organization, Franklin OIT is dedicated to providing exceptional IT support and leadership characterized by optimism, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Franklin OIT offers a variety of college-wide IT services for free and cost recovery rates. The office is responsible for overseeing department-level and college-wide technology purchases including computer lifecycle, faculty start-up, and student technology fee needs.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS preferred.
  • Relevant certifications desired.
  • All team members are expected to be HDI Support Center Analyst certified.
  • Franklin OIT arranges for all new hires who are not certified to attend HDI SCA training and funds one certification exam attempt.

Position Summary
This position works as part of a team to utilize industry-standard tools and best practices to develop, operate, maintain, and monitor Linux and Windows systems, services, and infrastructure in both a VMWare ESX and a data center environment.
This position, along with other System Administrators in the college, is responsible for many core services for Franklin College including, but not limited to, file and print services, software licensing servers, and website hosting servers and infrastructure.
This position automates, manages, monitors, and troubleshoots servers and the applications running on them. This position works in collaboration with other systems administrators, IT professionals, instructional technology professionals, and web developers to provide, maintain, and support core, instructional, and research services for faculty and staff within the college.
In addition to strong technical skills, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge management and leadership skills as this position will serve as a technical lead and mentor for colleagues. This position also involves strong communication and interpersonal skills as it interfaces with colleagues and management to document, troubleshoot, and communicate about incidents and workflows.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Technical

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills (hardware, OS, networking, and application).
  • Experience supporting and maintaining systems (EL/RHEL, Debian, Windows Server).
  • Experience with enterprise clustered and virtual hosting environments (VMware preferred).
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring tools (Nagios preferred).
  • Data center experience including the installation, management, and support of storage devices, physical servers, and switches.
  • Working knowledge of security standards and best practices.
  • Working knowledge of automated configuration management and CI/CD tools (Puppet, PowerShell, etc).
  • Knowledge of database development and management concepts.
  • Experience with L2/L3 networking (Routing, VLAN Management, load balancing, firewalls).
  • Familiarity with scripting and tools (PERL, BASH, Python, etc.).
  • Familiarity with the creation and use of software package management and versioning tools (YUM/RPM, Aptitude, Git).
  • Familiarity with 3rd party cloud hosting and services (AWS, GCS, or Azure).
  • Lead and manage projects and follow through to completion.

  • Develop, maintain, and support college-wide servers, hardware, and services
  • Work closely with other teams and colleagues to properly architect complex systems
  • Oversee and participate in the day-to-day management of physical and virtual servers
  • Serve as a technical resource and point of escalation for management and colleagues
  • Manage and delegate tasks with team members in relation to assigned projects
  • Train and develop technical skills with team members and mentor them on Franklin OIT standards and policies
  • Respond to requests for service and engage in proactive support through participation in routine patching and upgrade cycles
  • Work with research clients to architect and implement solutions based on their unique needs

  • Oversee and participate in other aspects of server support across the college (may include imaging, configurations, security implementations, networking, hardware, and software support, sharing best practices)
  • Utilize automation to effectively manage tasks and support services
  • Provide after-hours support to mission-critical services as part of a rotating on-call schedule
  • Administer and support virtualization services
  • Familiar with deploying and using cloud-based Infrastructures, Platforms, and Software as Services (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS respectively).
