Chemistry Instructor (Full Time Tenure Track)(BC) Kern Community College District Salary: $84,133.91 - $110,393.67 Annually Job Type: Full Time Job Number: FY24-2501024 Location: Bakersfield, CA Department: Physical Science Basic Function The Physical Sciences Department at Bakersfield College is seeking a faculty member for a full-time tenure-track Chemistry Instructor to be part of expanding programs, including a new BS in Research Laboratory Technology program. History of Bakersfield College Bakersfield College is located in Bakersfield, California, in the heart of the Central Valley. Established in 1913, Bakersfield College is one of the nation's oldest continually operating community colleges. The college serves 33,000 students annually on the 153-acre main campus in northeast Bakersfield, at the Delano Campus (35 miles north of Bakersfield), the Weill Institute (downtown Bakersfield), and BC South-West (southwest Bakersfield). About the Bakersfield Community Situated in the south San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield has a rapidly growing economy in a location that is central to some of California's best places to visit. About Chemistry in the Physical Sciences Department In Fall of 2022 the department moved in our new $65 million Science and Engineering building with laboratory classrooms dedicated to supporting a modern STEM curriculum, which includes a 2-semester university-level organic chemistry sequence. We have laboratories dedicated to each of the areas of chemistry taught and modern teaching instrumentation such as two broadband NMRs, Perkin-Elmer UV-VIS spectrometer, Perkin Elmer FTIR spectrometer (ATR), Shimadzu GCMS, multiple CEM Discover microwave reactors, and Vernier LabQuest-based experimentation. The program also has workstations for computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and other functions as deemed necessary by the faculty. New instruments being purchased for Fall 2024 include qPCR, ICP, HPLC, and Karl Fischer titrators. Additionally, the chemistry faculty have opportunities to improve student learning through a sustainable energy program, a $1 million per year Department of Education STEM Title III grant, and a new BS program in Research Laboratory Technology. This assignment may include teaching chemistry courses at various locations, different times, and with different modalities. Bakersfield College offers college courses in the greater Bakersfield area, rural communities, and high schools using the following modalities: traditional, face-to-face, and interactive broadcasts. Other duties include: participation in student recruitment and articulation, transfer programs; maintaining subject matter currency; developing and revising curriculum; using computers and technology; assessment of learning outcomes; collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities Minimum Qualifications Master's in chemistry OR Bachelor's in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master's in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry OR the equivalent. (Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions.
